Happy (HubNuggets) Valentine's Day
68Happy Valentine's Day!
Saint Valentine's Day - renown for the giving and receiving of love tokens: chocolates, candy, flowers, jewelry, sexy lingerie, and fanciful cards. Renown also for massacre and mayhem, February 14 has, in modern times, become a day when we declare our regard for that special someone.
Whether you have received many or few Valentine's cards, you know how special those cards made you feel - even after the butterflies in the tummy, the sweaty palms, and the nagging torment waiting to see if your special someone would return your feelings and bless your day with a cherished, heart-shaped card.
This St. Valentine's Day, along with cheering on the eighteen HubNuggets nominees, we will be celebrating nine special people who help out each week on HubPages. These special people, quality hubbers in their own right, lend their support to a program that helps bring new writers to the attention of the HubPages community through the HubNuggets Program.
The HubNuggets Team
What does the HubNuggets Team do?
Each week, team members KoffeeKlatch Gals, Patty Inglish MS, RedElf, ladyjane1, and Enelle Lamb, supported by staffers Simone Smith, Maddie Ruud, and Jason Menayan, sift through all the eligible hubs in each of the three featured categories.
Following strict guidelines, they search out eighteen examples of fine hubs - hubs representative of the "gold standard" of the HubNuggets, by new-to-HubPages writers.
Then, each member takes turn-about to create a round-up hub showcasing the eighteen hubs, and invites the HubPages community to visit the round-up hub to read the nominees' hubs and vote for their favorites.
Then team cheerleader, ripplemaker, visits each nominated hub, leaving a message about the contest with a link to the round-up hub, and urging the nominee to have all their friends and family visit the hub and vote for them in the contest.
Happy V Day Maddie, Jason & Simone
Happy V Day Enelle, Patty & ladyjane1
Does the program make a difference?
The HubNuggets Program holds a contest each week to spotlight the work of new writers on HubPages, in an effort to help them gain recognition, traffic, and assist in fostering a positive HubPages experience that will help them grow and develop as online writers.
I can tell you, from my personal experience, that the program can make a big difference. Two months after joining HubPages, I was nominated, and won a spot as one of that week's HubNuggets. I did gain page views, mainly from HubPages at first, but more importantly, I gained confidence. People responded to my articles - they read my hubs and left comments - and as my SEO skills improved I began to reach a wider audience.
These days, though most of my traffic comes from search engines, I cherish the comments left by my many friends and readers on HubPages.
Aside from personal testimonial, what empirical evidence exists to show the program works? After reading AEvans' hub Top New Hubbers Of 2011 I thought I recognized the names of some past HubNuggets winners, and decided to do a bit of research. Here are some interesting statistics:
- Of the 116 featured as top hubbers and honorable mentions, 26 are HubNuggets winners (that's 22.4%, or, almost 1/4)
- Of the 116, 17 have won Hub of the Day, (that's almost 15%)
- Of the 35 HubNuggets and Hub of the Day winners, 8 have won both awards.
There are also 8 winners of the HubPages Hubbie Awards on her list, and one person, Denise Handlon, won all three awards!
Looking at these numbers, it would appear that the HubNuggets and Hub of the Day programs do a good job of highlighting top-notch work. Between HubNuggets and Hub of the Day winners, there are 35 featured hubbers that have won either HubNuggets contest, been selected as the Hub of the Day, or both!

Why do we do it?
Being nominated helped me gain the self-confidence to put myself "out there" as a writer. That, in turn, helped me to grow as a writer, and develop my craft. I was raised to honor the ideals of service and duty, so serving on the team allows me the opportunity to give something back to the community that helped me both personally and professionally.
When I was invited to join the team, the "e" on our avatars was nonexistent. The only way anyone knew we were on the team was by reading the HubNuggets hubs.
There has been much discussion of that "Elite" title lately, and of those who bear it, and of what might be a better title, or more indicative of what we do, or less objectionable to the community.
I will not speak to that, but I will tell you that the members of the HubNuggets Team would do what we do with or without the accolade, the badge, the title, or the acknowledgement. We do it to help and support a great community of writers that helps and supports us.
So pour a cup of your favorite beverage, and settle back to enjoy some fine reading in this weeks' selected categories, and make sure to vote for your favorite in each.

This is great background information on HubNuggets Award, RedElf. I hope it is clear to all the Elite members that all of the work that you do is very much appreciated. It also looks like a great list of nominees. I will share this link with my followers, then go about reading and voting!
HubNuggets Valentine? I like it! Beautifully scripted, well-written hub - as usual. Thanks for compiling these. It's going to be hard to choose. :)
Thanks for clarifying this for me; I just blindly go alone writing and wasn't even aware of how this process worked. I appreciate you taking the time to write this hub.
Thanks for including the statistics that show how high-quality Hubs receive recognition from different groups of contest operators solely by virtue of the the merit of their Hubs.
I'm TOTALLY digging that heart-shaped cake, RedElf! Great explanation of the competition and why it matters.
Also, congrats to the nominated Hubbers! I've cast my vote and look forward to seeing who comes out on top.
Great hub that explains the tremendous amount of dedication and hard work that goes on behind the scenes in the HubNuggets program!
Voted up and interesting.
Wow how awesome is this?! Just wished I'd read it a little sooner!!
I second Millionare's comments, that I hope you realize that all the elite members are truly appreciated. I have interacted with some of you and have never felt any aura of feeling better than others or anything that should cause a change of name. According to Webster, a definition of elite is, "a group of persons who by virtue of position or education exercise much power or influence" and you all exercise power and influence for the good by helping other writers show their work. I love hopping hubs but find the hopper doesn't always showcase the best work. I also will randomly choose a hub from the latest category and read. You guys have a way of finding the cream of the crop of newer writers. Thank you for all you do and for writing these wonderful stories each week as we find out who the nominations will be. I believe the programs are a benefit to the community, as are you who serve in the elite crew. Thank you! And congratulations to all nominees.
Hi Red Elf,
Thanks! This is awesome.I'm really happy to be on the travel list of articles to vote for in this week's Hubnuggets. I've only been here six weeks or so, and I really appreciate the nod from the hub team. Happy reading everyone. Good luck to all.
Very impressive. Both the writing and the statistics. It's not surprizing that former hubnugget nominees become such a valued addition to hubpages.
Congratulations to all nominees.
I, along with the others, enjoy what I do in connection with ferreting out new writers.
thanks for the statistics on the top 2011 hubbers and these hubnugget award winners and nominees etc.
I've very big on chocolate at this time of year. It's never been an important holiday to me, but there is always lots of great chocolate out around now. :)
Thanks for all the info. and happy belated Valentine to you as well.
This is simple great and much effort is put into arriving at this. good work.
RedElf, you have always been the one who shared with me how much it meant to you to have been nominated on the Hubnuggets years ago. That meant a lot! As part of the first batch of the Hubnuggets Team headed by Funride then, I realized I am still being the "cheerleader" until today because like you this gives me joy as well.
Thank you for this heartwarming hub. I too have grown as a writer because of the support from the people on Hubpages. Some of those people may not be active today but I am deeply grateful for all of them.
Happy Hubnuggets Valentines day to you and the rest of the team. :)
On my way to read, cheer and vote! Love and light...
Thanks for the heads up on the hubnugget vote! Nice hub, can I ethereally eat the ethereal chocolates? No carbs! Actually I want to east the whole strawberry cake for real!
Wow, thank you so much for including my hub as a nomination, Red Elf. I'm honored to be a part of such a supportive and helpful community!
Red Elf, I absolutely agree with you and share a similar experience with the Hubnugget award. Yes it did boost my following numbers and increase my views for a period of time but the main thing that it did was boost my confidence. I do not know that I would have had the same feelings of confidence without all of the encouraging feedback that I had received with my nomination. Thanks for another great hub and for all that you "elite" hubnugget writers do!
I forgot to add that this is why I try hard each week to come back to read and vote for the new nominees. It was very encouraging to me and hope that I can pay it forward to new hubbers.
What a tasty hubnugget hub! I have a sweet spot for this award too as it gave me the confidence to really get writing here on many topics that were just mulling about in my head. Good luck to all the nominees.
One of the best gift you could gift to your love ones is giving them and valentines card.
Thanks for posting this, RedElf - I'm honored to be nominated, and I learned a lot about the program from reading this hub.
Wow what a great hub and thanks for the chocolates they are def my weakness. The explanation of the hubnugget team was very informative...great job as always...voted up and awesome cheers.
Are there specific topics only to vote on? I've never seen health or bipolar in there to vote on.
schoolgirlforreal, the categories change each week and many health hubs have been nominated on previous roundup hubs. It just depends what hubs are nominated.
Redelf, a great HubNuggets Hub! And I especially loved the hubs in the writing categories. Great entries.
