Meet Mr. Murphy - Rescue Cat Extraordinaire

Often, when we are looking for the perfect family pet, we overlook a great source of possible "family additions". Rescue groups and organizations that specialize in salvaging society's casualties almost always have a wide variety of "rehabilitated pets" ready for adoption.Rescued animals are given a second chance for a happy life with a caring family through the efforts of such caring people.

Usually these animals - once adorable and tiny little bunnies, puppies, chicks, and kitties - may have outgrown their former "cute" stage. The families that once owned them may have moved, become unable to care for them, or may simply have grown tired of the demands on their time and resources. Sadly, some of the rescue animals are strays, or have been abandoned, or removed from abusive environments.

One success story...

Sitting like a "Mister" - this is one of his favorite poses, sitting up, gopher-like, or with his front paws on the arm of a chair.

Sitting like a "Mister" - this is one of his favorite poses, sitting up, gopher-like, or with his front paws on the arm of a chair.

The journey begins...

Mr. Murphy started life as a stray. Abandoned soon after his birth, he somehow managed to survive long enough to be scooped up by the local Animal Control Officer, and taken to the town's shelter. Warm and fed for the first time in his short, young life, the tiny, malnourished kitten still had an uphill battle ahead, with the cards stacked against him.

The shelter did not have a "no-kill" policy, and when the lovable and loving kitten wasn't adopted, he was sent to the town's vet to be euthanized. Kitty won the tender hearts of the vet, and her staff. She couldn't quite bring herself to put the charming little fellow down, and so, for another two weeks, he again managed to hang on against the odds.

As luck would have it, a grieving pet owner and long-time client of the vet was on his way to see her with his beloved pet, a venerable, Tabby-Striped Siamese, named Tigger. Mr. Tigger's quality of life had deteriorated sharply due to old age and disease, and it was now time to ease his passing.

Tigger's owner and the vet agreed the vet would wait until the owner's wife could come and say her goodbyes, so Tigger was installed in a cage next to the little waif, who was still awaiting his own end.

A few of the many faces...

Except for the Tabby "M", this little guy is a ringer for Mr. Murphy when he first came home.
Except for the Tabby "M", this little guy is a ringer for Mr. Murphy when he first came home.
You rang?
You rang?
What was it you required?
What was it you required?
I was sleeping, what did you think I was doing?
I was sleeping, what did you think I was doing?

From frightened, underweight kitten, to King of all he surveys...

After the owner's wife had made her farewells, the vet suggested the woman might like to just hold the little stray, explaining that he was supposed to have been put down, the vet, hadn't had the heart to do it.

The woman reluctantly agreed, and the tiny waif was placed in her hands. The little fellow purred so loudly his whole body shook, nestling into the woman's neck. His big, bright blue eyes blinked up at her and the little stray was a stray no more.

Murphy has grown somewhat since those first few weeks, though he has a few unresolved issues from his earlier life. He still startles easily, and does not like change.

Murphy also has a kind of feline-agoraphobia - he panics when he goes outside, and tries to hide under the house. To avoid the repercussions, he is now an indoor kitty, even though he still thinks he needs to go out when the dog does.

Aside from that, though, he is as happily well-adjusted as any cat can be. He is the King of the world, and alternates between treating the dog as his personal chew-toy, and advocating for her.

He has become truly adept at knowing when she wants something, what it is she wants, and selecting the correct human to provide it for her.

To see him in action is quite a treat. Murphy will sit in front of his helper-of-choice, or "victim" if you prefer, and complain loudly until they get up.

Then Murphy will walk in the direction he desires them to go, meowing encouragingly over his shoulder, or weaving helpfully between their legs.

Once they arrive at his chosen destination, be that the back door (to let the dog out or back in), or the refrigerator (to find a treat for the dog), Murphy will loudly demand you accede to his request, secure in the knowledge that you, like all humans, know exactly what he wants you to do. Not surprisingly, he is often right.

If you don't catch on right away though, never fear. Murphy is quite ready to repeat the whole process until you do.

From rags to riches...

Mr. Murphy has blossomed from a frightened, undersized kitten into a fully-grown, seventeen pound (neutered) beautiful example of of a Tabby-Stripe/Blue Rag Doll. He is sweet-natured, and very affectionate.

Mr. Murphy greets everyone with equal enthusiasm, flinging himself to the floor immediately in front of you, paws upstretched, purring loudly. When you bend down and try to pick him up, you'll discover exactly why these cats are called Rag Dolls. As soon as you begin to lift them, they turn into limp "rubber cats" that hang from your arm, or shoulder, like so much dead weight.

Rag Dolls can be quite large, though not as big as Maine Coon cats, and are usually very affectionate, though they prefer to choose their own time to be petted and loved.

Mr. Murphy is also most fond of running water, a trait common to many Siamese cats. He loves nothing better than to sit on the bathroom vanity and play with a trickle of water from the faucet. He prefers fresh water, and is the first to let you know when his water dish needs refreshing.

How can we help?

Before we consider selecting our next family addition from a pet shop, we should consider calling our local shelters to see what rescue pets are available.

We can get involved as volunteers. There are many opportunities to make a contribution, helping to organize or work at special events. Shelters are always looking for volunteer pet-walkers, and other care-givers.

This would not be a good match for me, because I would bring home every cat, dog, and bunnie that came in to the shelter, but many find this a most rewarding experience.

As well, the very first link above, sent to me by another hubber, takes you to a site where you can contribute to sheltered pets at no cost. Animals are deserving of our care and consideration.

We need to ensure that they have every chance to live in a safe, caring environment, and become part of a loving family.

Shelters are a great place as you quite often save a life We got our big 16 pound tuxedo cat from a shelter when he was much smaller and he quickly adapted into the most loving and sweet cal I've ever owned. Great hub.

RedElf - Mister Murphy appears to be "a cool cat!" Wouldn't it be something else were he able to do the keyboard thing and tell everyone how happy he is to land in cat heaven?

Gus :-)))

He's a beauty, RedElf, and I can see he owns you as a proper cat should. I am owned by quite a few...what a life of servitude! :)

Love the photos too RE. I rescued a cat years ago and will never forget the experience. Lots of love and joy. Sadly I became highly allergic to cats and had to give him over to friends. It was devastating. I'd have a rescue kitty any day if I could. I didn't know there were "no kill" shelters. Thanks!

Fabulous Hub! Rated it up! I love to hear heart warming stories like this...I just wish there were more like these. Thank you for writing this hub. I'm linking it to a few of my animal hubs, hope you don't mind?

Good for you, mulberry1 - they were so lucky you found them.

Thanks so much, Pamela99. My sister has at least two tuxedos, and they are both a good size, too. Lovely sweet kitties.

Most welcome, Hh. Thanks for the comments, and you, too, entertainmentplus!

Hey, Gus - right now his idea of keyboarding is to stretch out on top of it - but I'll work on it ;)

Yes, lorlie6 - I am once again "cat staff". Lucky me!

So nice he went to friends, GL. There's usually at least one "no-kill" in most larger centers. I certainly prefer to support them.

Me, too, Paradise7! I'd take 'em all if I could.

Except for the early mornings when he decides I need to get up and feed him when it's still dark, he's quite lovely, Sandyspider.

Thanks, thh, Please be my guest - I'm happy for the plug! I'll be over to return the favor.

If only all pet stories had a happy end like Murphy's. I am a member of Madrid's (Spain) animal shelter and most stories are more than sad. Thank you for this hub, RedElf.

I've enjoyed this hub a lot, RedElf. I also have a rescue cat - although I do not 'own' him...he's sort of the boss in certain matters in our home...such as - he's the boss and that's all there is to it?? lol

You're too right - I don't think anyone actually "owns" a cat!

Thanks so much. We have also rescued another wee doggy, and her sister, as well as trying to coax a very young momma cat and her kitties out from under the house. We will take them to the (no-kill) SPCA near here once we manage to lure them out.

What a wonderful and heartwarming story!

This hub is very informative and useful how we can help shelters and stray animals.

I have 3 cats and a dog, all strays at one time.

I loved the photos, and your Mr. Murphy is a good-looking kitty.

Thank you for sharing this and I don't know how I have not seen this hub until now?

Thanks so much, Sannel! Mr. Murphy is quite a character - his new fun activity is "stalking" the new dog. Wishbone, the new guy, is still very much a puppy, and Murphies take great pleasure in watching his antics, and occasionally blocking a doorway or two, much to Wishbone's frustration.

SanneL profile image

Mr. Murphy sure sounds like quite the teaser! He reminds me of my cats that has no respect whatsoever for my big fuzzball of a dog, which is of course a big embarrassment to the old guy. Animals are just too funny. They give me so many laughs during the day. I couldn't live without them!

I just came across this amazing story RedElf and really enjoyed it. I love Ragdoll cats and Mr. Murphy is adorable. I hope he gets along with your new little dog. Thanks for sharing. Take Care :)

Sannel, our lives would certainly be less joyful and interesting without our "critters."

Mr. Murphy is getting used to the new doggy, though he still goes "hunting" occasionally, A.CT.
