Top Ten Things to Have on a Deserted Island: Desert island, tropical paradise - could you survive if you were marooned
95I have always both loved and hated TV shows about people who find themselves marooned on deserted islands. From the fun and family-oriented offerings such as The Castaways, Swiss Family Robinson, and Gilligan's Island, to the more serious Robinson Crusoe, and the downright spooky Lost, castaways on deserted islands have fared well or poorly depending on the whims of their writers.
There are pros and cons to the whole deserted island scenario. I love the idea of finding solitude in some exotic paradise, but I hate the idea of being stuck there completely alone. I totally embrace the idea of being released from housework, which can be boring at the best of times, and onerous on a beautiful day, but I'm not crazy about the necessity of having to forage for food every day.
...and how would we know what to bring with us, provided we even had that option?
Airlines are out
After long study and research, I have become convinced that being ship-wrecked is definitely the way to go, if you're planning to be cast away on a deserted island.
Even though Lost would have you believe differently, the chance of actually crashing on the island, or at least close enough to salvage any supplies, is a real long-shot. Islands tend to be surrounded by really deep water, so unless you're a diver, you won't be retrieving much gear from the cargo hold.
Besides, no self-respecting flight attendant would let would let you board with even minimal survival equipment, and no airline allows tools in your carry-on - especially machetes, saws, pry-bars and their like.

Practical items to have on a deserted island
If you were ever really stranded on a deserted island, you might want to have a few things along with you. Actually, you would probably like to have lots of things along with you, as well as a few friends to keep you company.
Item 1: The top item on my list would be Mike Holmes and his crew, from the hit home renovation show, Holmes on Homes. I know they'd be able to erect an amazing shelter in no time - and it would well-surpass anyone's building code.
Barring Holmes and his crew though, I'd opt for a good set of tools: a sturdy hammer or two, both a Swede and straight saw, a hatchet, and an axe.
Item 2: The second item would be a medi-center, preferably one with an excellent trauma facility, and a doctor, and staff who are all well versed in curing tropical diseases, and treating insect bites.
As that might be tricky to arrange in advance, I'd settle for a first aid kit with several scalpels, some good, sharp needles and suture material or thread, a large bottle of salt tablets, a water purifying kit or bleach tablets, rolled gauze for bandages, alcohol wipes, and sulfa powder.
Items 3 - 5: Though it might be handy to have an assault rifle, a scope, an unlimited supply of ammo, and an armorer to fix it when it jams up, especially if the island was home to wild pigs or, heaven forfend, a tiger, I'd probably do fine with a machete, a couple of sharp knives and a whet stone.
Attaching one of the knives to a length of bamboo, or a straight branch would create a dandy fishing spear, and a sharpened and fire-hardened pole would make a useful medium range defensive weapon. Besides, rifles are noisy. I'd really rather just go fishing, and gather fruit and coconuts.

The best gear to take along
Item 6: The next thing on my wish list would have to be fishing gear. A good rod and reel, plus some tackle would make fishing, and life so much easier.
Items 7, 8 & 9: Heavy-duty combat coveralls and camouflage would also come in handy, along with a wet suit, though bathing suits and loose cotton clothing would be more comfortable. I would be happy to compromise on some UV protective long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and a pair of sturdy hiking boots.
Have you ever noticed that there rarely seem to be any mosquitoes on TV shows? In real life, however, the ubiquitous little blood-sucker infests almost every area in the world. The protective shirt and pants would help minimize bug bites, and protect me from the worst of the sun. To keep the sun off my face and head, I could weave a broad-brimmed hat from palm fronds or grasses, and ditto for a parasol or sun-shade.
Item 10: The last thing on my list, but probably one of the most important, is a supply of water-proof matches, or a lighter and lighter fluid. A far more practical addition to my supplies would be a flint and steel in a waterproof container. Then I could light as many fires as I needed to, and never have to worry about running out of matches.
The next time you travel, consider packing some emergency supplies. Even some waterproof matches and a couple of energy bars can help if you are stranded for a time. It's far more likely that you'll be stranded in an airport terminal, though, and that's a whole 'nother ball game. Just ask Tom Hanks...

I would not last on a deserted island alone. I'm not a good hunter, have never learned how to fish, and I don't weigh much so I wouldn't last long.
I'd say this is a pretty well thought-out list, RedElf! I'd also work on creating my own version of Gilligan's Island (at least until the Harlem Globetrotters got stranded there, too, at which point I'd work on making a makeshift basketball court). You're right about mosquitos...I guess if the island has mammals, it's going to have them. And ticks! Hmmm... ;)
Dear RedElf,
I am a great fan of Tom Hanks two movies "cast away" and The Terminal. If you see my bounce back from failure will have the cast away tomhanks photograph in the front.
you had really written a favoutrite topic connecting some of my favourite movies.
All the ten things will be usefull if you are planning for a
deserted island.
But if youa re accidently getting marooned due to a plane crash or ship break then you get nothing what you will do simply hope for the best.Atleast tom hanks is lucky to get afoot ball some food and a spade.
I had voted this up and awesome for the feeling youc created me
I am following you and wish to hear from you in my hubs when you get time.
Food is no.1. Entertaining hub, RedElf.
Fascinating read. Thanks for tantalizing us with what-if's.
Beautifully written hub. i would love to live on a dessert island but in the sun.
I love it...if you got your first wish on each item - you would have a Walmart- staffed by carpenters and pro-survival teams...ha
Your hub reminds me so much of the Tom Hanks movie,Cast Away. I think the one thing I would place at the top is a water proof gas lighter-or anything that can start a fire. Cool hub
Good ideas. I've to go with some books and a hammock..right, if only one can survive on fresh air. Rated up.
Love it, all you would need is a good hunting knife and you could make everything you could possibly need. I wonder if you could make a laptop out of it. Hmmmm....
i got a 91% on your quiz, liked your hub, all sounds good, i would definitly go with having a sharp knife at least, but i would never survive the mosquitos :(
Sorry, Red, but this sounds like cheating. A medical kit, a tool kit - all are full of lots of things. Selecting items for your ship wreck seems like it should be limited to, say one tool, or if it's ten things, ten actual items. I would chose a large boat with a complete compliment of foods, staff, etc. haha!
What a great hub...loved the quiz :D:D:D too fun!
Pretty interesting hub. Although, I'd probably also want some emergency flares and possibly a two way radio, so I can alert any ships that pass by to rescue me. Other than that, I think I'd go with most of the items you suggested in addition to some rations. Anyway, thanks for writing this, as I had a lot of fun reading this.
I read this expecting a list of the same old same old... what I came away with was that you want to be shipwrecked at the Four Seasons sans the wait staff.
When I was a kid I liked Gilligan's Island a lot for some dumb reason. Now as an Adult I watch a lot of Adult Survival Shows - Man vs Wild, Survivor, Man Woman Wild, Survivor man. So I'm keen to this topic. What most people are not aware of is all the pollution on islands around the world. It's nearly impossible to go to any place in the world and not find human garbage - mostly plastics washed up on the shore.
#11 Needs to be insect repellent. Biting Ants and bugs on those islands could be nasty.
Could I at least bring plenty of grain and hops? Nothing says deserted island like a cold (or maybe a warm) homebrew! Great HUB thanks
Beautifully written and quite witty as well. I enjoyed this Hub. Thanks for the good read. :)
Hi again RedElf:) This is such a fun article and very well written. Not many of us think about this, but things can happen. I believe it is always best to be prepared for anything. A great article! Votes up. :)
Best wishes.
Red Elf, I feel certain it was merely an oversight, but you forgot CHOCOLATE!!! I would have to have a large stash to give me motivation to go on . . . That said, I flunked the survival quiz.
...well being a typical man I would added on this list: a copy of Playboy and an unlimited supply of beer - lol lol - but I love the idea behind this hub which is more fact than fantasy if one thought about it - and I will post this marvelous hub of yours to my FACEBOOK page with a direct link back here - and finish off by saying that you are the 'ultimate' hubber because you have such a fantastic selection of hub topics and you always do a world class job on them ..... lake erie time ontario canada 3:03pm
Wouldn't chocolate melt on a desert island? :-) Better add a fridge to the list! Enjoyed the hub - thank you!
Some sort of desalination device would definitely be the most important item to have here if the desert island lacks a fresh water source. If that's the case, no one's gonna survive more than a couple of days! However, even with such a device, you would need enormous amounts of energy to make it work. Oh heck, we're all dead ducks then without fresh water!
I really enjoyed reading this as it starts a lot of discussions. I especially liked the quiz at the end (which I scored an 83). Did you know that I wrote a hub on Wilderness First-Aid and Outdoor Survival?
Again, a wonderful Hub that only you could pull off! It's great to be back!
RedElf, This is an interesting list, I would have to say I would look for water first, and the fishing gear is a neat idea for a way to eat. As for being deserted on an Island I dont know how long I could make it. Thanks for an interesting article!
Voted up. I like this Hub; it centers around a philosophical question many of us have pondered at least briefly at one time or another. I do think that your list is a good one (assuming, of course, that one is not allowed to "cheat" and bring a sat-phone, a waterproof protective case for said sat-phone, and extra batteries for said sat-phone). However, you can't neglect the non-practical side of things, either... I can MAKE most of the tools I would need to survive, without much effort on my part, including clothing and weapons for defense/hunting... however, nothing I could do would stave off the inevitable boredom, loneliness and ennui; I would almost HAVE to bring something along that would help me remedy these ills if I were going to survive on said island for any length of time.
This was great, got me thinking of what i choose if i was stranded. Fantastic Hub!
Hmmm, for me, I'd bring a family walkie talkie. I know it's old fashioned but it's still useful too. :))))
Wow, the pictures you have on your hub would actually make me want to get stranded on an island! lol
REDelf, Great hub! Interesting suggestions! A Bible and a camera are must haves for me as well! Thank you for sharing, peace & Blessings!
Really good read but I may have been eaten by the tiger, oh well not a bad way to go. Your quiz was great, lots of fun. Funny thing is, having a laptop or radio is sort of useless if you don't know your location, so a portable GPS would be sort of handy, maybe an attractive women and you can keep the GPS. Take care and enjoy the weekend...
I would really want some deodorant and tooth paste.By myself or with a man, either way I would want to keep up my hygiene.
Brilliant! Blase. Loved your Hub. Best read so far.
Great hub, fun to read! I agree about the deodorant and toothpaste.
Gah. If I were ever stranded on a deserted island, it would probably only be a handful of hours before I deliriously began searching for a McDonalds or something. Great hub! :)
how about taking a copy of 'story of philosophy' by will Durant. just for sake of entertainment.
If I am stranded, what I want most would be a cone of vanilla ice cream and a good book to read. Oh, relaxation!
Well written Hub. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Fun and interesting hub RedElf! I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Kool! here are my things to have on a island
1. Pistol with lots of ammo
2. A sharpend knife
3. Wood and a few tools
4. Food such as fruit and meat with Water that is fresh
5. My pet hamster Phil
6. Clothes for any type of weather
7. My bff Ainslee
8. Shampoo and Conditioner and lotion
9. A computer with a hamster-powered genorator
10. My family and a hamster-powered fridge
What a wonderful and a good idea. I can think of worse people to be on an island with than Holmes.. ;) This is very unique.. loved it!
Haha, interesting that you chose a clip from a Tom Hanks movie that's NOT the one where he's stranded on a desert island... though he's definitely still stuck in a foreign environment.
Interesting hub, I liked it a lot
I'd definitely bring Wilson the volleyball....just sayin
I got 100% in your quiz! I guess I'm not doing too bad on my survival skills after all.. But it's good to know cause you know what they say: It's a jungle out there. Great hub.. Keep posting!
Fabulous Hub Redelf! But of course, I would never be stranded on an island that didn't have a Starbucks! Just say'n. Love it love it love it! Voting up!
Blessings,
~Lisa
Yeah! Cast Away is a fav movie on these lines and the Discovery Shows too. I scored 91% by the way. But you didn't ever doubt the power in my frail arms when you compiled the quiz :)
Great humour. Nice ideas to create interest and hold it. Loved reading and clicking. Voted up.
Haha I scored a 91% Yay!!
Definitely thought-provoking.
How about a laptop, a solar-powered generator, and a satellite dish for internet? Then I could still stay involved with Hubpages. :)
Seriously, I would want tools and weapons, extra clothing, a simple water filtering device, and lots of books, as well as journals or reams of paper and pens or pencils.
I enjoyed reading this. It was nice light reading, something I needed after today at work. Its crazy how back in the 1700's people closly lived like this.
I can't believe I missed this premise. Well done. I thought I hit all the survival themes. I would suggest that using a Tom Hanks movie would call for Castaway rather than The Terminal, but that's just me. ;)
Two things - a coke, and a global satellite cell phone, with which I'd call for help! Get me outta here!!
83% is pretty good I think-- I love survival stories, but Robinson Crusoe has always been one of my all time favorites. Not too long ago I actually found an old edition with nice hand glued illustrations, in an antique store and re-read it with great pleasure.
I enjoyed this hub. It is a question that most of us have asked ourselves at some time. In the real world I doubt we would have have much of anything to help us survive, except whatever survival knowledge we might have absorbed from TV and movies. Your test says I have what it takes, so I feel pretty good about surviving if I can just reach the island. I can't swim so I really need to be stranded on shore to have any chance at all.:)
Personally.. I would survive ok... But my list of needfull things would probably be rather short...
My family... starting with my wife.... what would a vacation like that be without her to share it with..???
Since I never go anywhere without my utility tool.. except when the TSA Gestapo make me put it in Check-in baggage... But a good larger bowie type knife or survival knife is a good thing to have after the Multi-tool. (Leatherman Wave or Charge TTi)
Bic Cigarette Lighters.. several of them to be used sparingly.
Bottles to carry water in.
Mess Kit things... whatever is available to boil water etc.
Fishing gear... mainly line and hooks but a pole would be a nice luxury item.
Bible... lots of time to read and this makes 66 books that are a real good guide to keep your mind where it needs to be.
Shovel...
Plastic tarp
Nylon 550 cord
Cotton for wicks
sling shot or BB gun and some ammo
I suppose an assault rifle and ammo would be cool too... but most people would not know what to do with it these days... (I would.. my wife would.. my kids would.. but that is just us)
Whatever clothes could be rounded up... shoes would be a good thing (as tom hanks found out)
First aid Kit: stocked with Anti septics, anti biotics,Pills for headaches, body aches and any other medicines that could be packed inside... like Lidacaine creame (or similar) for numbing burns (hint: Baby Orajel) suture kits and lots of bandages, gauze, etc...
Few Goats would be great.. you could have milk and cheese not to mention fresh meat now and then.
Salt is available from the sea remember your on an Island...
Good sense of humor; I enjoyed your writing style and this Hub; keep up the good work.
Cool hub!
10 human clones of Bear Grylls
:-) Most stuff is optional... But when I watched Tom Hanks in Castaway.. I could not help shaking my head and shuddering at the fact he did not have a Leatherman tool on him... That gives me the creeps just thinking about it :-)
Hey RedElf, boy did you put together an extensive hub here. WOW! I found your quiz to be interesting, however, it told me that I aced it with 83% and would most likely be "supreme ruler"? LOL! LOL! Someone asked a similar topic in the forums and I could only choose to take one item with me and I said I would only need a survival knife. LOL! Great Hub! :) Vote up and marks across the board! :)
I to enjoyed this hub, goood entrainment lol, while many of these things you couldn't plan to have were you stranded, its a great wish list :)
You need to google Bear Grylls, he's a survival expert and if you've got a genuine interest in survival, he's your guy! Great funny hub, cheers! :)
In the case of Tom Hanks film... I was almost envious:-) If he had of opened that box though... all of his troubles would have been solved... :-)
I think I'd need to add to the list, "Internet Access"!!! Thanks for the hub. I enjoyed reading it!!
Voted interesting. enjoyed reading your hub. Don't see myself doing very well alone on a deserted island, and I love islands.I just don't have the skills I would need to survive. If,however, I had all the items you mentioned, then I'd have a much better chance of survival....at least for a longer time.
Great Hub a good bit on entertainment! :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Wasn't expecting anything on your list!
How about a working Helicopter?
Nice Hub Indeed
I travel a lot. I find it very useful.
Outstanding article. Great information and I'll keep this as reference. Hope I don't get to use it, of course! Ha ha . . .knock on wood.
Interesting hub and quite entertaining, although being a male, should I say that perhaps some sort of companionship would have been on my list.
These are interesting choices. I was thinking more basic but I guess if your asking about the top ten things to have that would be them.
Nice to have all the relevant information in one hub & nice tips to follow :)
Very amusing Hub. Deserted islands do not have medi-centers and I'm not sure how you're going to have unlimited supply of ammo for your rifle. Good ideas though. I enjoyed reading your article and your pictures were very well selected. I am also a big fan of Tom Hanks!
Entertainment is part of our life and I go to outside in every summer season. This hub has lot things about the entertainment. Thanks for shearing information.
Living on a desert island is certainly a challenge many people would relish, the problem is, would they be able to cope and ultimately survive?
RedElf: It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, none of us are going to live forever so why not take the opportunity lol!
@RedElf - Good Hub!
Ultimately, stranded for a while would be all good. Im sure we could take on nature and handle it.
A semi-secure hut, knife/gun/spear and fishing rod (whatever tickles your fancy when it comes to hunting), buckets of insect repelent, guitar and a pen and paper might do the trick.. Plenty of time to meditate and listen to the waves, play guitar...
Medi centre!? Wishful thinking! Thought this was a deserted island? So you must be a doctor then??
I love your sense of humor in your hub and I am with on number one, Mike Holmes. The heck with worrying about the rest. That cutey would make up for the loss of anything else.
Very entertaining read. Thank you. I feel much better about being stranded now :-) - Cre8tor
I enjoyed reading this. Good job! :D
Thanks for this entertaining hub. Because I am a girlie girl, I would hope I would at least have some lipstick with me. But honestly if I was deserted with others I am sure I would get kicked off the island. My idea of camping is a nice camper with all the essentials.
Gail
I always ask this question as an icebreaker when I am getting to know someone. I usually ask "If you could bring 3 things with you to a deserted island what would they be?" My top one is to bring a very strong, healthy, and handsome man. LOL
Thanks for this interest post. It sounds strange but I would love to be stranded on a dessert Island, as long as I had a Wilson ball!
Thanks for your interest hub. I don't think I would take any chance for staying in a deserted island without having any proper facilities.
This is a great topic. I wouldn't want to be marooned on an island without proper shelter and a pesticide man at the ready. Voting up.
I'm so happy to have read recently -- speaking of being marooned -- that the United States is finally going to help solve the mystery of Amelia Earhart's disappearance.

The Terminal - good movie. I enjoyed this Hub. Thank you.
