When Love Dies...

By RedElf

After years of searching, and wrong turns, you finally found the one of your dreams. Your eyes met across a crowded room, in a dim cafe, walking by the sea - all those old cliches, yet fresh and new. Your best friend, your soul mate - you met, you fell in love, you promised each other 'forever.'

You stuck together through thick and thin, through all the ups and downs that life has thrown at you. You built a life together, and made a happy home in which to grow old together. You've weathered all the storms - or have you? What happens when the one you love, your best friend, your soul mate, tells you they don't love you anymore?

How did this happen? When did it happen? When did it start? How could you not have seen it? ...and how do you pick up the pieces and go on when the one you loved more than anyone, your best friend in the world, doesn't want you anymore?

Symbols of Eternity
Symbols of Eternity

Two hearts lie, bleeding, on the floor where once love lived, now cold and lorn;

To lips that spoke of love, to arms that held all life, and light, and hope,

To souls, now empty of that pairing bond, one to another bound,

I say, "How can I live,

How can I breathe, when all the air is gone -

When all the love is gone?"

And answers have I none...

Two hearts lied. Bleeding on the floor, love lies as well. Cold, alone,

Two lips that spoke of love, two arms that once held all the world

In sacred bond, now nothing hold - no one loves here any more;

My arms are empty now;

My bed is empty as the life you left behind;

A life that wonders how

It goes, unwanted, on...

Did love die slowly, strangling from the petty 'day-to-day'?

Did sight, and sound, and too-familiar chafing wear away desire?

When turned your head, your heart, from mine?

I never loved you less;

You smile still brightened room and warmed my heart,

A beacon shining through the storm,

Safe harbor's light...

My mind is racing, counting up the signs - so crystal in the clarity of hindsight -

Ticking off the signals not received, the subtle shadings then ignored,

And every slightest hint of looking other-ward...

The willful blindness of

Love's un-belief, undone by need, and fear,

And yet, shamed by desire,

Still wanting you...

Our bed is empty, sheets once dewed with love are sweat-slick cold,

Bone-deep arm-ache, gut-sick, freeze within with icy breath of un-desire;

And that bleeding heart, ce coeur sangant, this sign of grieving love,

Bleeds out that last drop of

Our love upon the stony, unforgiving ground

Where lover's roses, verdant, bloomed

In scarlet grace...

This heart is far to bruised and torn to start again, to seek anew,

To search, to hope - too many pieces Humpty-like upon the floor;

Some bits of dreams, some shards of prayer. No potter's hand

Could ever mend, un-break,

What careless hands left, loosed, and threw away;

Thus shattered trust and faith, and broke

From grief am I...

Yet broke and heart-worn, still I linger here, though not for love,

For love is gone to others arms, and empty of you, mine hold only memories;

Hold fast to dreams, for fast they fade, and faster, flee from my embrace;

Hold heart, hold mind, hold self,

And gently fold the shredded rags of soul

Against another day when breath,

Or warmth,

Or light

Might yet return...

Amazing poem. While reading this I thought about the ones I care about. And how they went trough with a divorce. I often wonder how it gets to that? Divorce seems to be so common today. I thought that marriage is suppose to mean you and your wife are one, together forever. Great write up. Voted up.

Beautiful and sad. Anyone who has lost love in a relationship can relate to this.

This reminds me of a song sung by Nat King Cole: a Blossom Fell.

I have not found my human soul mate and doubt I ever will. I am okay with that if I don't.

(I have found my feline soulmate, though...) :)

This is a very moving and touching poem. We all can understand the powerful yearnings evoked here. I'm a hopeless romantic; I think love should be forever, and when it doesn't happen that way, I feel so sad, so bereft--and so betrayed.

Having the person you love full heartedly turn your back on you is one of the worst feelings in the world. but love does return in a better form.

I once thought so too, rorshak - funny 9or not funny) how things change :)

Thanks so very much, princessa! Your words mean a lot to me!

Allana, too right, one always hopes another will come along, but sometimes its best to be solitary for at least a while,

Flora, I hear you. Right now my life is full with three furry friends, and choirs and theater, and that is a good thing.

Paradise7, I think the betrayal is the hardest part of it all. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting.

Well, I would certainly like to think so, Nikki, but I am happy to wait a few more years.

Laura, thanks so much. I shall have to give that some serious thought!

This simply took my breath away. I was moved deeply by your brilliant piece. Sadly I truly believe that we only Love deeply once in our lifetime with a mate. The others that come along after are secondary to the first deep love of our life. I to felt the sting of loss, my nest is empty.

I know love is fleeting now, my soul mate awaits me not in this world. But being here amongst the living, one must take on a whole new perspective of BEING whether alone or sharing with a room mate. To have tasted LOVE as deeply as many of us have was a wonderful blessing.

I am thankful that my maker shone the light of love into my soul before it became blackened once more. Bravo, rated up and over the TOP..all buttons pressed except the funny one. Hugs from this Saddle to you my talented scribe.

Hi, Ken! So glad you liked the poem. I am honored you stopped by and shared some of your own story.

"'Tis better to have loved and lost than never loved at all" is not a motto I ever wanted to adopt, let alone live by. I am thankful to have had such a love in my life, but I cannot quite give up the hope that I may yet love again :(

Hugs to you, my friend

I wish you love in your life, it may just be lurking around the next corner you turn. I truly believe a higher power than our self is always in control and Kismet happens. LoL I am thankful for having tasted love.

Your words are so powerful and drip with emotion. I am sorry you have lost love. I remember how painful a loss of a relationship can be. It stinks and you think you'll never get over it. I hated when people said it to me but it's true that "time heals." It doesn't take away the pain and sorrow but it does get better. Blessings :-)

Thanks so much for your kind words, Minnetonka Twin. I think many of us have "loved and lost." Things do eventually get better if we let them. Blessings to you.

RedElf,

Oh my word, this was tender and powerful and makes me want to hug you.

I don't know, I believe there are reasons for things in our world... Right now, I am hearing Adelle's lyrics: "Never mind, I'll find someone like you... I wish nothing but the best for you."

Voted UP & ABI & passionate... all my best and believe in yourself, mar.

Thanks so much. That is high praise indeed coming from one so talented as you, marcoujor. I believe there are reasons things happen, too. We live in hope.

RedElf, I am deeply touched by this poem, for I know what it is to have loved and lost. I only pray that the love will some day go to a quieter place so I may go on and maybe love another. Never will a love be as spiritual as the one I just lost, but still there is hope for a spiritual bonding and love with another...there is always hope. Rated UP and across, but not funny. Hugs and peace.

Awesome and haunting. Love will come when you are not looking for it. Somehow it just finds you.

"My mind is racing, counting up the signs - so crystal in the clarity of hindsight" this particular line struck me as the feeling most of us have when this happens. Up, beautiful, and awesome.
